Hurricane Harvey just hit Houston and it has left the metropolis in catastrophe. But in the midst of the storm are people who have opened their hearts as well as their doors to help their fellow men. One of the many who cared for those who were affected by the floodwater is the owner of a mattress chain, Jim McIngvale, who is also known as Mattress Mack.
His home was also affected by the storm but he went to work on Sunday morning and saw the devastating damage in Houston. It was then that he decided to open a couple of his locations as shelters for his fellow Houstonians.
For McIngvale, a well-known figure in the city who has a history of donating to charitable causes, opening his furniture stores as shelters was an easy decision.
“Being together in a space is helpful for all of us,” McIngvale told TIME. “People don’t feel like they’re on their own.”
