Divorce has always been a controversial issue in America. The increasing divorce rate is uncontrollable that it seemed like it has become a normal thing for some married couples to jump from one marriage to another.
Pastor John Piper of Desiring God powerfully addresses this issue after a man asked him about his son wanting a divorce after just two years of marriage because he has fallen out of love. In this case, Pastor John highlighted the true meaning of marriage.
“Staying married doesn’t necessarily mean staying in love,” he said. Marriage is the hardest relationship to stay in and the one that promises glorious, unique, durable joys for those who have the character to keep the covenant.
He even mentioned about the significant conception of marriage, which is the covenant relationship between Christ and the church.
If you divorce because you don’t feel love anymore, there is nothing noble, nothing great, nothing beautiful, nothing high, nothing truly significant of such motive. The model of a man’s commitment in marriage is how Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).
Marriage is an act of worship; it’s a display of the price and the preciousness of the covenant-keeping love between Christ and His church and it glorifies Christ. And the blood He shed to possess the bride forever. We cannot even conceive of a greater significance of marriage than the one God has given.
“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” -Mark 10:9
