Sadly, the Jezebel spirit is at work in many churches today and we are not aware of it. But what really is Jezebel spirit? How does it influence us? And how do we deal with it?
In 1 Kings 18, Elijah was able to kill 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” (1 Kings 19:2).
Elijah was terrified so he fled and hid inside a cave where an angel of the Lord fed him to strengthen him. The Lord asked him what he was doing there and commanded him to come out of the cave and stand on the mountain for God was about to pass by. Fast forward, God told Elijah to go back where he came from to anoint some people and he did so.
Did it ever cross in your mind that Elijah, who was able to kill 850 false prophets, ran out for his life because of a woman’s threat, Jezebel? What’s with Jezebel that terrified Elijah so much?
Jezebel is the spirit of manipulation, control, envy, lust, and greed just to name a few. A person with this spirit would always try to affect you, your decision, and your destiny through control and manipulation. And when you try to go against it, you will be labeled as rebellious. God himself told us that we should not tolerate the Jezebel spirit because He is not pleased with it and he is against it.
“But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman–that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet–to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.” -Revelations 2:20
Here are the characteristics of a Jezebel spirit:
- They zero in on those in charge to increase favor
- It will manipulate situations seeking to gain recognition and appear spiritual
- False humility
- Having impure motives, they seek out ‘disciples’ and constant affirmation
- Family life is shaky, the spouse is usually spiritually weak, unsaved or miserable
- Eager to gain control, they gather weak-minded people to them and teach false doctrine
